Joomla is an Open Source Content Management System and is used throughout the world.Joomla is an open source solution that is freely available to everyone. Joomla is installed on the host server therefore nothing has to be installed on your PC / laptop. The basic functionality in Joomla can be extended with extensions.

What are extensions?
These Joomla extensions are extra "Add-ons" to the standard functionality.Extensions can be divided into:

  • Components
  • Modules
  • Plugins
  • Language files
  • Templates

Components
Components provide main functionalities and get their own page within the site allocated. Examples include a contact form, a guestbook, a shop or a forum.

Modules
To get additional functionalities on a page, modules can be installed. Examples include displaying menus, banners or mini-forms for login or search.

Plugins
Plugins are able to manipulate certain content on the background. A good example is the plugin to protect an e-mail address to spammers.

Language files
Per page and website a default language can be set.

Templates
The template is responsible for the layout and format. Objects can be identified and provide the look of a website. A template is used for the entire site or certain parts.
